Shirley graduated in 1987 from Mars Hill College with a Bachelor’s Degree in Allied Health, and an Associate Degree in Nursing from Asheville Buncombe Technical College. At that time, she became employed with St. Joseph’s Hospital as an RN on the Urology/Oncology unit. After three months of employment, Shirley became certified to administer chemotherapy. Shortly thereafter, she became a charge nurse on the 7-3 shift and passed the oncology certified nursing exam. She became a member of the Blue Ridge Chapter of Oncology as well as a National Member of the Oncology Nursing Society. Within a short period of time, Shirley became the Assistant Unit Director. When an independent oncology unit was developed, Shirley continued as the assistant unit director and assisted in developing unit standards pertinent to oncology while serving as a nurse preceptor for new employees. She continued in this position until 1993 when she took a position as a chemotherapy RN with Cancer Care. Her responsibilities included physical assessment, teaching, evaluation and implementation of chemotherapy under guidance of physicians, assisting with outlying satellite clinics, monitoring patients on high dose chemotherapy protocols and following patients undergoing transplants coordinated by outlying University Hospitals. In 2001, Shirley began studies to complete her Bachelors of Nursing from Western Carolina University. At that time, she began working closely with a physician performing physical exams and seeing patients along side the physician. In 2003, Shirley received a BSN from Western Carolina University. In August 2003, Shirley enrolled full time at East Tennessee State University to complete her Master’s Degree. She graduated from ETSU in December, 2004 with a MSN and a certificate as an Adult Nurse Practitioner. Currently, Shirley remains employed at Cancer Care as an Adult Nurse Practitioner.
